The 2017 Student Indoor Nationals in Cork took place on the last weekend in February. The competition was to be the first two-day student event for a few years. Having stayed in Cork on the Friday night, we were all well rested and ready for the qualification shoot on Saturday. The Saturday proved to be very successful for NUIG with high scores across all divisions.
On Sunday came, arguably, the most important part of the weekend; head-to-heads. Our Captain, Ruairi O'Loughlin shot very well wining two of his three head-to-heads to take home bronze in Mens Compound. Mary Aherne surpassed all expectation by shooting a remarkable qualifying score on Saturday and then wining three of her four head-to-heads to take home a bronze medal in Womens Recurve.
After the individual head-to-heads came the much anticipated team events. First to compete was the recurve team which consisted of James Burke, Mary Aherne and Mark Walsh. The fist match of the day was against the hosts, UCC, which we won comfortably. Next came DCU,again another win for the confident NUIG recurvers. However, the final against the favourites, MU, didn't go our way and we took home the silver medal.
Next up came the barebow team, which comprised of Conor O'Beolain, Niamh Meyler and Mark Harrington. Comfortably winning the first match against the hosts, UCC, NUIG cruised into the final to be narrowly beaten by MU in a shoot off to take home NUIGs second silver team medal.
In compound team, Ruairi O'Loughlin and Patrick Hurley put in a great display to beat MU in the semi-final. However they narrowing missed out the top spot to DCU, taking home yet another silver team medal for NUIG.
